Plane Watching

Best light: Morning light is generally favorable at Gravelly Point for south‑flow operations (RWY 19 arrivals). Bring sunscreen in summer and a wind layer in colder months—the river breeze can be strong.

Gravelly Point (along the George Washington Memorial Parkway) is a popular viewing area immediately north of Runway 19. Expect very low flyovers when RWY 19 is in use.

  • Amenities: restrooms and picnic tables.
  • Bring a 70–200 mm or wider lens for close‑ups.

Parking & etiquette

Gravelly Point is part of a National Park Service area. Park only in designated spaces, pack out what you bring, and be courteous to families and cyclists using the trail.

Best seasons

Spring and fall offer crisp air and dramatic light; summer heat can shimmer in the mid‑day, so plan morning or golden‑hour sessions.

When to go

Weekday late afternoons can be lively with commuter banks and golden‑hour light. Bring a light jacket most of the year—river breezes make the park feel cooler than downtown.
